Three pairs of entrepreneurs recalled stories of how they co-founded their respective companies in front of a sold-out audience in Santa Clara on the evening of Wednesday December 8, 2010. With over 160 attendees, there was only standing room available at the historic first ever collaborative event between OPEN SV and TiE SV. The co-founders of Kno, D5, and Ankeena, displayed tremendous solidarity with their founding partners as they dodged several awkward questions from the crowd. Clearly, they formed their companies on the basis of solid trust coupled with sharp business acumen. In an admirable attempt to inject critical thinking into the discussion, OPEN SV President Naeem Zafar tried his best to dispel the notion that starting a company with a friend could work as well as it had for the panelists, but the latter were steadfast in their loyalty to each other. The key takeaway for the evening was that not every friend has the potential of being a good business partner. Ankeena co-founder Rajan Raghavan made a telling point by stating that a CEO can cause more damage to the company by failing to fire his or her friend (if necessary), who may have even co-founded the company, than by keeping him or her. |
